City Council has agreed to improve 6 existing hand launches on the Bow and Elbow Rivers in Calgary and install 4 new launches. Check the map on this website for locations.
The City plans on installing riverbank signs for these sites in 2018, but unfortunately they are not planning on installing street signs so far.
BOW RIVER:
Montgomery Home Road – a portable toilet has been installed at this hand launch so far.
CRUA requested disabled access toilets at all locations, so that they would be large enough to be used as change rooms too–see photo.
Edworthy Park – a portable toilet has been installed at this hand launch so far.
Sunnyside – Steps down the riverbank probably won’t be installed at this raft landing until late 2018.
St. Patrick’s Island – No improvements have been done at this hand launch so far.
Carburn Park – No improvements have been done at this future hand launch so far.
Ivor Strong Bridge (Deerfoot Trail) – No improvements have been done at this future hand launch so far.
Douglasdale South – stone steps down the riverbank and a portable toilet have been installed at this brand new hand launch–see photo below:
ELBOW RIVER:
Sandy Beach – the City has done a very nice job improving this hand launch, with an access trail, picnic tables, and information display have been installed at this hand launch. Unfortunately, the City unexpectedly built the new hand launch about 150 m upstream of the old location, which will cause confusion–see photo below & feature photo:
Stanley Park – No improvements have been done to this hand launch so far.
MacDonald Bridge – No improvements have been done at this future hand launch so far.
